The beauty of Saigon, Vietnam in eyes of tourists
The first image that tourists would conjure up when arriving at Saigon is crowded streets full of a yellow sunlights. People are always rushing as if they would be late for some appointment with someone, which is so a contrast to the image of several street vendors quietly at corners of streets which are not noisy in welcoming customers but good in serving buyer to buyer in an own special manner of Saigon.
Taking a walk around the streets at the center of the city such as Le Loi, Dong Khoi, Nguyen Hue, Ham Nghi…, tourists would be soon in harmony with Saigon’s fast modern rhythm of life. High buildings, luxurious hotels, fashion shops, souvenirs stores… are places taking much time of travelers. Ben Thanh market is considered a highlight that tourists had not better miss. Four main gates: East – West – South – North gates are always wide open to welcome travelers. The market is one of some Ho Chi Minh attractions with a full collection of all goods and products from every part of Vietnam.
Despite of the noisy bustling urban of the modern life, Saigon keeps for its own romantic sights of streets with shades of trees such as Tu Xuong, Truong Dinh, Le Duan…, all of which gently offer natural air for visitors to take a stroll sightseeing the central city of Saigon.
World trade
In the past when men’s needs were few,
it was not necessary to get things from distant lands. But today, the
people of one country depend on the people of another country for a
variety of things. As a result, world trade has developed. Without world trade, it would be difficult for the people of any country to get many things which are now considered necessaries. Some countries are not rich in mineral resources. They have no iron or coal mines, while others have too many of them. Again, some countries are not suitable for agriculture while others have several fertile plains to grow crops
Further, even if a country is rich in natural resources, it may not have enough skilled men to exploit them. For such geographical and other reasons the peoples of the world have learnt to buy things which they cannot produce profitably and to sell things for which they have a special ability to produce. West Malaysia, for example, specialises in producing rubber for which there is a great demand from several courtiers in the world. But she has no ability to produce machinery and several other things. West Malaysia therefore depends on other courtiers for many of her needs.
In the same way, all the countries of the world co-operate and exchange things with one another. From other countries we get motor- cars, radios, television sets and several other things, which we cannot produce ourselves. At the same time we give to other countries the things that we can produce better than many others. In this way, every country specialises in producing only a few things. As a result, the quality of goods is improved to the common benefit of the people of the world.
World trade has also raised the standard of living of the people in the world. We are able to use things made in countries across miles of ocean. As a result of all this, life has become more comfortable than what it was before; and it is realised that a country could hardly progress without world trade.
A journey by train
The
house in which I lived before was near the railway station. Trains used
to pass by at regular interval and I had become so familiar with their
sound and sight that I took little interest in them. It never occurred
to me that I might make journey by train some day. However, when my
father decided to take up a new appointment in the place where we now
live, it was decided that we should travel by train. It was only then
that I discovered how pleasant a journey by train might be. My father, mother and I boarded a train one afternoon. As the train moved out of the station, I began to think of the days I had spent in our old house which I could still see from the train. But soon the house went out of sight, and I began to think of my journey itself.
The train was now moving quite fast. The first thing that impressed me was the beauty of the landscape. There were green valleys, and tropical plants could be seen everywhere. In certain places there was tall grass. All this reminded me of the geography lessons I had in the classroom. Several palm-oil and rubber plantations could be seen now and then. Sometimes I saw a few houses here and there. I also saw many vegetable gardens at several places.
The train stopped at many stations, and soon it became dark. But sometime later the moon appeared and the landscape looked romantic. As I looked outside, I felt a thrill of admiration for the great artistry of nature.
Inside the train, too, everything was interesting. Some restless passengers moved about aimlessly and their restlessness was amusing. Some were sleeping with their mouths wide open, into which some mosquitoes blundered. Others were reading magazines and newspapers. Occasionally, the ticket-checker passed by. At one corner I saw two policemen keeping a close watch on a man who was hand-cuffed.
At every station a few passengers alighted from the train while a few boarded it. Whenever the train stopped at a big station, I saw a large number of people on the platforms, smartly dressed, and often smiling. As the train moved out, many waved their hands and the passengers too waved in response. After we had passed several stations, I felt sleepy and closed my eyes. When I opened them, I saw the dim light of the dawn. I looked outside and saw the mist-covered plants. The air was fresh, and some birds were flying about. The scene looked extremely beautiful and I was lost in admiration of it. But we soon arrived at our destination and my enjoyment came to an end.
Crimes in society
The
human society is full of activity. People work in all kinds of business
Firms, government offices, factories and other places, to earn their
livelihood. Some work from dawn till dark; many work only at night; and
others work during the day. At the same time men with criminal tendency
are engaged in all kinds of activity, which often cause great hardship
and sorrow to a large number of people in society. Men develop criminal tendencies because of numerous frustrations. Society has always failed to satisfy the social, emotional and other needs of a large number of people, many of whom have therefore turned to crime for either survival or recognition. The activities of such men represent a constant threat to the welfare society, and much being done to reform them.
But criminals cannot be reformed until they are apprehended. By that time, hundreds of people are forced to live in fear at the hands of criminals, who resort to violence at the slightest provocation. Numerous people of various descriptions have been killed by criminals without proper cause. Society is therefore straining all its resources to bring criminals to justice. Large sums of money are being spent to employ men and equipment for the prevention and detection of crime.
Criminals are desperate men, and when they are pursued, they fight tooth and nail to escape capture. Therefore, those who are employed to capture them have to be brave, intelligent and well-trained men. To have such men always on the alert for the protection of society involves much expenditure.
Punishment of criminals today, however, is not the same as what it was in the past. Society has realized its responsibility towards individuals who always find a bone to pick with ít. It is now believed that criminals could be reformed. Therefore, psychologists and others who are responsible for the welfare of criminals are doing their utmost to train criminals to live a good life in the future. Only those who commit the most serious crimes are punished severely to deter others from committing such crimes.
A heroic deed
The story of man is full of heroic
deeds. One of the acts of heroism that I have seen myself was that of
my uncle, who was attacked by a huge tiger while we were in our
plantation, one day. My uncle, a young and well-built man, and I had left our home early in the morning to do some work in the plantation. When we reached there, we could hear some dogs barking in the distance. But we did not suspect anything, and began to do our work.
While we were working, however, we noticed some foot-prints of some animal. We then examined them closely and were satisfied that they did not belong to any member of the cat family, the most ferocious of animals. We then resumed our work. My uncle took a long knife and began to cut some sticks and branches of plants scattered throughout the plantation, while I did some other work. Soon, however, I saw a movement in the bush, a short distance away. I was alarmed. I ran up to my uncle to draw his attention, but he was hardly interested in what I had to say. He continued to do his work. But shortly afterwards, my uncle himself observed the movement in the bush. Yet, he showed no signs of fear, and his composure dispelled my anxieties. He warned me, however, to be careful, and picked up an axe that had been lying on the ground. His knife, he gave to me. Then, he moved slowly and cautiously towards the bush, ready for any attack.
To our horror, a huge tiger soon emerged from the bush. But my uncle was prepared to face it, to escape seemed impossible. The tiger too seemed to be fully aware of the strength and courage of its adversary. It paused several times while advancing towards my uncle. Then all of a sudden, it sprang on my uncle, but his agility enabled him to escape the sharp claws of the brute with the slightest injury. Now with the axe still in his firm grip, my uncle struck the tigers face again and again, until it was bleeding profusely. The length of the handle of the axe made it difficult for the tiger to get to close to my uncle. That the tiger was at a disadvantage was clear to me from the beginning.
In the end, however, the tiger collapsed and died. Within hours, after that all the people in our area heard of my uncle's bravery, which saved us both from death. It was indeed a greatest act of heroism that I had witnessed.
Why is agriculture important in the world of today?
Since the dawn of history, agriculture has been one of the important means of producing food for human consumption. Today more and more lands are being developed for the production of a large variety of crops. In Asia, vast areas of land are being used to produce rice, wheat, rubber and a variety of other crops. More than half of the lands occupied and developed by human beings in the world are devoted to agriculture. That agriculture is one of the most essential means of producing food is realised easily when we think of the types of things that we eat. The rice or wheat that we eat comes from the land. Even potatoes and other roots or vegetables and even leaves such as tea, as well as the fruits that men eat are the products of the soil that covers the earth. In fact, everything that we eat, except meat, fish and other kinds of flesh come from the land, and what grows on the land is part of agriculture. Even the sugar, oil, coffee and other beverages that we use are products of plants that grow on land. In the same way, many of the medicines that we use are made of plants that grow in various parts of the world. The tobacco that we use for relaxation also comes from a plant. Thus, it can be easily observed that without agriculture we would be almost without food. It is true, however, that in the remote past men did live mainly on flesh that he obtained by hunting. But such a kind of life was unhappy and inconvenient, for animals were not found everywhere easily. Therefore, men turned to agriculture for his livelihood. Today, agriculture continues to provide almost all the food that men require to survive on the earth. |
What career would you like to choose after leaving school
Today, it is not easy to choose a career. Hundreds of students pass various examinations every year and compete with one another for positions in the various professions which are not so many as there are applicants. I would, however, like to choose teaching as my career. Teaching is an interesting career for several reasons. As a teacher I can learn many things, especially if I teach to an udder-secondary school. If I teach History or English, for example, I have to read many books to make my teaching lessons more interesting to my pupils. Thus, I can acquire more knowledge of the subjects that I teach than what I can learn from the class text books. It is indeed a fact that a teacher learns a lot from the class text books; but that is hardly enough to make the teacher's lessons interesting to pupils. A good teacher must therefore read many other books. Again, as a teacher, I have to speak well so that my pupils will be able to understand my instructions well. In this way I can improve my powers of expression. Even my pronunciation of words will improve to great extent. Further, as a teacher, I shall have enough leisure to read and prepare for various examinations. It is possible today to sit for many important examinations by studying entirely at home. Thus, I can acquire important qualifications. Finally, as a teacher I will be respected as an educated person. People will assume that I have certain qualifications and show their regard for me and the opinions that I express. Thus, I shall be able to live a happy |
Advantages and disadvantages to a developing nation of receiving economic aid from other nations.
The spirit of giving aid is magnanimous; it blesses the nation that gives and the nation that receives. An aid cannot be equated to alms giving nor it is a doling of charity. An aid assumes that the receiver can be sustained at the right time. It also assumes an equality sharing of the products not in the economic sense but in a social and altruistic sense.
After the World War II, the USA found the wisdom of helping under-developed nations and those that were battered by the war. By virtue of her position, the USA could help. Of course willingness was there and Marshall Plan under which the USA helped the European nations has become a classic example. The USA had a surplus of many goods which she could easily part with. This, of course, had an economic advantage for her for otherwise she would have to face a glut of goods leading on to recession.
This is an example only to show how economic aid had become a necessity in the modem world. There are nations which have had an advance start and so their economy has been sound. But there are many nations of the world who have to start almost from scratch. If these nations were allowed to starve by the most favored nations, the former may turn to ideologies other that democratic...
Solidarity
1. Describe how the students of Secondary 2C lacked the motivation to excel in anything.
2. Describe how their form teacher told them a story to inspire them to work together as a class.
3. Describe in detail how the class then worked together by forming various committees and working responsibly.
4. Describe the result of solidarity in the class.
Three classes were judged to be the top classes of the form. However, Secondary 2C was not on the list. Some of the students felt downcast. They felt that they would never be able to excel.
Mrs. Chen, their form teacher, however, had great faith in her students and felt that they only lacked motivation.
Just before beginning her lessons that day, Mrs. Chen told all her students how a single stick could be broken easily but when a number of them were bound together, it would be impossible to break the bundle of sticks. The students realized that the moral of the story was a guideline for them to put into practice.
As soon as class was over, the class chairman, Thomas, called for a class meeting. He divided the class of thirty-five students into seven equal groups and delegated each group with a special task. There were to be four academic committees, one discipline committee, one social affairs committee and last but not least, one counseling committee.
The academic committees were put in charge of one or two subjects each, and it was the members’ responsibility to collect relevant notes, question papers and model answers. The discipline committee’s duty was to enforce the policies agreed upon by the class as a whole. The members of the social affairs and counseling committees were to organize social activities, and to help those who were facing any personal or family problems, respectively. This plan for solidarity turned out to be a roaring success. The class felt great fervor and excitement in performing the tasks assigned to them. In the process, they interacted more with one another and got to know one another better.
By the time the final examinations were near, the class had a large collection of notes, ideas and model answers to rely upon. Most importantly, there was a strong bond of friendship which was charged with sincere interest for one another’s welfare. After the examinations, none of the Secondary 2C students was even interested in the results of the class evaluation. They knew, in their hearts, that they were winners
How do you spend your weekends?
Outline:
1. Describe in detail what you do on your weekends and who you usually spend your time with.
2. Describe how you feel when the weekends are over.
As the school-week comes to and end, my class will become rather restless for what we will already be planning to do during the weekend.
On Saturday mornings, I will inevitably receive a telephone call from my good friend, Tom, who will implore me to go over to his place. There, the morning passes very quckly as we play computer games, exchange gossip and boast about each other’s feats during the week.
In the afternoon, we may go to watch a movie together, if there is a good one. Sometimes, we manage to sneak out of the apartment unnoticed, with Tom’s fishing nets, to fish in the nearby canal. However, we bother dread turning home after this escapade, as we will usually be greeted with a good scolding. Fishing in the canal has been categorically forbidden to both of us. Tom often comes to my place for dinner on Saturday evenings because he loves my mother’s cooking.
While the whole family sleeps late on Sunday mornings, go to Sunday school. For me, Sunday school is not just a time of religious learning but also the time play football in the church grounds. There are about fourteen boys in my Sunday school class and all of us are keen on soccer. Sometimes, even the few girls in the class join us in the rough but thrilling game. On my return from Sunday school, a magnificent lunch will be laid out, waiting to be consumed. The whole family congregates to eat and joke. After helping my mother to clean up, we will be off for a family outing usually to the beach.
When I get this gnawing feeling inside me, I know the weekend is over. A sense of loss hangs in the air. Time does seem to pass so quickly during the weekend.
Describe your school
I study in XYZ Secondary School. It is one of the best schools in Singapore. It consists of several Roman style buildings. Our school has all the facilities of a modern school, such as well furnished and airy class rooms, best laboratories, a big library with a huge collection of books, a vast play ground and even a swimming pool.
Our school building is situated in the middle. There is motorway leading from the main entrance. The playground is on the left of the motorway and a big garden on the right. When you enter the building, the principal’s room is on the left. They are all well furnished. There are twenty classrooms. Our laboratories are well equipped. The school library has an up-to-date collection of books on many subjects. Our librarian and her two assistants are very helpful.
Our school, like other schools, has prescribed a uniform for us. We have to wear white trousers, a white shirt and a black tie. The girls have to wear white shirts and skirts.
Our principal is very strict as he pays strict attention to behavior, punctuality and cleanliness. The most well-behaved and punctual student will be assigned as the class prefect.
Our principal is a strict disciplinarian. He accepts the help and advice of all teachers. Though our principal is strict, he is fair and loving. He tries to find out the reason and guides us. If one violates any rules, he will be punished. Our principal is very strict in this aspect.
Our teachers are also very strict. They teach us with the utmost care, guide us with our assessments and other preparations and help us in times of need.
I like my school very much and am proud to be a student of that school.
Some people enjoy living in the country but others prefer big city life
In the country, we can live in the midst of nature. Countryside houses are spread out and there is plenty of greenery. Sometimes green paddy fields or orchards are found in the neighborhood. The beautiful surroundings with trees and shrubs are pleasing to our eyes. Moreover the air is fresh and cool, which is good for a healthy living. A country life is full of charms. The rippling rivers, the grazing cows and the chirping birds give us great pleasures in life. Country life is cheaper than town life. The people who live in the country are a contented community because they have few desires.
Houses in the city are generally provided with modern conveniences such as electricity, running water, telephones and all sorts of labour-saving devices. There are plenty of means of communication: buses, taxi-cabs, etc. City dwellers have more means of improving their minds than countrymen: day schools and night courses, public and private libraries, lectures and exhibitions.
There are many places in the city where you can get a bite or a drink: restaurants, coffee-houses, tea-rooms, bars and refreshment rooms, etc.
Last but not least, the city provides its inhabitants with various sorts of entertainments, playgrounds and sports fields, public gardens, museums, movie-theaters, concerts…
For my part, no matter how comfortable or convenient the city life may be, I till prefer living in the country. I think it is healthier and more peaceful to live in countryside than in a city.
What do you think of the use and abuse of private tuition?
Private tuition as against what is being done in regular school is resorted to, in certain cases where the pupil is not able to follow his lessons well and wants to improve his performance. In some cases the parents want to make their child sit at his studies and in others it is a matter of prestige.
Whatever the reasons may be for private tuition, it can certainly complement and supplement the class work provided the teacher and his ward cooperate. It can be complementary when the lessons done in the class have not been fully understood by the student and he have to be told more than to impress upon him for the lesson done in the class may not have caught his brain. For this reason, tuition at home may be the answer.
Generally a class room is not conductive for individual teaching. The teacher pupil interaction highly spoken of is not possible in the class. A teacher normally tries to avoid a dull student. So, such a student may fail to catch the eye of the teacher. In such cases private tuition may be helpful. The pupil may not only be taught but also be made to work at exercises which they would normally avoid in class. If the tuition master is earnest, the pupils can progress and improve gradually.

My first day at school
My first day at school is a day I will never forget. I went to school for the first time when I was only seven years old but I can recollect all the happenings on that day. The day before my school opened, my father asked me to keep my books ready.
The next morning, I woke up very early. Then I bathed and dressed myself neatly. Then my father took me to school. In the school I saw a number of new boys and girls waiting in the corridor. They were all like me in the school for the first time. I was then taken to a classroom.
For sometime, I found myself helpless, but it did not take much time for me to be friendly with other students. After two periods, they began to tease me, I was much annoyed. During the recess time, all my classmates gathered around me. One pulled my shirt while another pulled my ear. A third boy challenged for a fight. I was frightened and began to cry. My teacher seeing me crying came to me and asked me why I was crying. When I told him my “story”, the teacher punished the boys, and from that time onwards they stopped bullying me. We had no lessons on the first day. But lessons started from the second day. I was really happy to be in school on the first day. It was indeed a memorable day.
Talk about the rights and duties of a citizen
Almost every modern state, especially a democracy, allows its citizens several rights; but in return, it expects its citizens to perform certain duties.
Among the rights enjoyed by the citizen in a democracy are the right to pursue his own affairs as he prefers; the right to express his views, however silly they may appear to others, and the right to move about as he pleases. The citizen is considered so important that his rights are protected by the law of the state, and whenever they are infringed, he can secure redress.
But in a totalitarian state, the rights of the citizen are so restricted that he has practically no freedom. The citizen is supposed to exist for the state. His interests are always subordinated to those of the state. Thus, his duties exceed his rights.
Even in a democracy, however, the citizen is expected to exercise his rights within the limits of the law. He should not do or say anything that may affect the rights of others. In exercising his right to act as he pleases, for example, he should not try to elope with another man’s wife or say anything slanderous about her or anyone. In the same way, his actions should not cause injury or damage to any individual or his property. He cannot kill as he pleases. If his conduct infringes the rights of others, then those who have been affected by his misconduct could take legal action against him and he will be punished according to the law of the state. In this way, the state protects its citizens and their rights from the thoughtlessness of any individual in the state. This means, of course, that every citizen in the state is expected to do his duty to his fellow citizens.
The citizen is also expected to give his services for the protection of the state in times of war, and to maintain law and order in his state, at all times.

Talk about your two interesting classmates.
Prefects are driven crazy by our mischief, teachers are perplexed by the lack of consistency in our work, but the principal is always impressed by our angelic behavior every time he enters our “little home”. It may seem, from this description, that we are actors or professional deceivers. We are, however, a group of teenagers who spend most of our time together in our cramped but cozy classroom.
Our school is an all-girl school. Thus where behavior within the classroom is concerned, we are completely uninhibited. It is no wonder that an observer can often see unusual manifestations of peculiar behavior. There are two particular interesting characters in my class who, I am sure, I will remember for a long time.
The first one is “Hero” as we call her. She is a pretty girl, with dimpled rosy cheeks. However, her build does not suit her lovely face. She has straight shoulders that swing from side to side when she walks, and she even walks like a man. She is tall and has strong muscular legs. She has earned her title justly as she always defends us when big boys from the neighboring schools bully us. She even fights for us. She does not have to worry about revealing too much of her legs while fighting as she perpetually wears knee-length shorts under her skirt.
The funny thing is that none of the girls envy her beautiful face, instead, her masculinity is the object of their admiration. Some girls will even slip little gifts into her bag. I have heard that girls are having a crush on her. Well, whatever it is, I always feel that our “Hero” will one day be a beautiful lady, admired and courted by many men.
The other character is a highly respected one. We call her our very own “Computer” as she is so good at solving mathematical problems. While most of us spend hours trying to solve a difficult sum, she does it while walking to the canteen during break. There was one instance when she solved a problem that our Senior Maths teacher could not solve.
The most interesting thing about her is that she does not look intelligent at all. She does not wear thick glasses which is typical of the intelligent ones in our school. She is also not the quiet, inhibited and serious type. She mixes freely with all of us. In fact, her closest friends are those who are weak in their studies. She chooses them to be her friends; and she never hesitates to help them with their problems with such clarity that our maths teacher often uses her skill and help in the classroom to advantage. I think “Computer” has great potential and one day she will make it to the ranks of the great mathematicians and may even win a “Nobel prize”. As time and space does not allow for a description of a few more characters in my class, I conclude with the satisfaction that I have written about the two most interesting ones. I am sure these will be remembered by all of us for a long time.
i think friend is an important part of my life.Without them i can not live
Reading, conference and writing make a full man
The major aim is to become and to be a citizen of the world. One may be a citizen of a town or city or a country that is easy because the spirit of the place grows into one’s own blood. However, to be a citizen of the world it calls for broader outlook, deep understanding and a judicious appreciation of other cultures; very few people could claim to be a citizen of the world. But it is plain that there have been and there are people who have reached that height. If we analyze and study their lives, we could see how their education interactions with others and writings have made them citizens of the world. So let us see the role played by reading, interactions and writing in the make up of a citizen of the world.
First of all take the case of reading. One reads for pleasure or for understanding or for improving his stock of knowledge. What we read in schools or colleges or professional institutions is only the basic; they show and guide what and where to look for. For examples, specialists like doctors, lawyers or engineers cannot be content with what they have studied in their colleges. Unless they study professional publications later they cannot be up to date. Thus a lawyer may study law reports; a doctor may study professional magazines and monographs. For pleasure we read a lot in our own mother tongue and in other languages as well. The companionship of books is the best that one could look for. Books may please you and never offend you. The reading may be light as a weekend magazine or it may be a master piece. One may read materials pertaining to his profession or personal interest; he may also read books on other areas for fun. Thus one may read books on dozens of different interests and this reading surely goes to make him a full or an all-round man. Such people of wide knowledge are really useful.
Very few people are good conversationalists though there are many well-read men. To be a good conversationalist, one requires certain qualities. Basically one must be a good mixer; in other words one should like to socialize and have the gift of the gab. He must be a good conversationalist and listener; he must never be offensive or must not wound the feelings of the others. At a higher level when a man meets others in conference he learns a lot from them. To be a success at a conference one must have the ability to put forth his arguments forcibly, logically and convincingly. He must have the patience to hear the other man. He must grasp and reply the other man’s point of view quickly. This makes one a ready man.
Coming to writing, we write when we cannot directly converse or talk to. In writing, words are recorded and once the writing goes out of one’s hand and reaches the other person, it becomes a record. The right words in the right place show the depth of knowledge of the writer and his penmanship. One may write simple, loving family letters, serious stories, poems, dramas, business letters and short articles. What ever is written the flow of words shows the man. You must write what you want to express in plain, straight forward language avoiding redundancy. In conversation one may be wandering; digressions are permissible. However, in writing each word or sentence must take you forward. We can see this in the great essays of master writers. The power of written words has been proved in the great books of the world. The compactness, the exactness, the sequence of logic all make good writing. The more one writes the more chastened he becomes like the polishing of a precious stone.
So to be a good citizen of the world one must read a lot, one must learn from companions and one must write. Then he can become a full ready and exact man.
The importance of newspaper
The newspaper, today, plays a vital role in human affairs. Its importance has not been diminished by the appearance of the radio or the television. Men no longer have travel to get information. The newspaper has become the main source of information. The newspaper has become the main source of information about local and foreign affairs. Though the radio and television convey important news and messages quicker than the newspaper, they seldom give the details of an incident. The newspaper, on the other hand, gives not only more detail about a particular incident but it also contains more new items. This is greatly important today when political changes occur with rapidity unknown before. Besides, the newspaper is easier to carry and it could be read at any time during the day. Further, the permanence of the printed word helps one to refresh one’s memory of certain facts and incidents reported in the past.
The importance of newspaper has been increased greatly by the spread of education. Education sharpens one’s curiosity about events in distant lands and also makes one conscious of the necessity to maintain one’s reading habits. In both respects the newspaper appeals most, especially if one finds little time to read books.
The newspaper should, however, be read with caution, for its capacity to do harm is great. Most people believe everything that is reported by the newspaper. As a result, the newspaper exerts a profound influence on the minds of reader. Therefore, when some news is reported wrongly either by mistake or design, it may cause a lot of harm. One the other hand, if the policy of the newspaper is to promote the welfare of the people, it could do a lot of good. For example, it could exercise its influence to persuade the government of a country to do many things for the benefit of the people. In a country like Malaysia, where there are many races of people, the newspaper could also use its influence to promote good-will and harmony among the people. It is therefore important to know the policy of the newspaper that one reads.
In general, however, the newspaper tries to report as accurately as possible, for there are various magazines and periodicals competing with the newspaper to provide accurate information on world developments, and it is the newspaper that links us with the outside world.
The importance of examinations
Life today has become so complex that examinations have come to play an important part in one’s educational career. Examinations are considered so important that most students are afraid of them.
The ability to pass an examination is indeed a valuable quality. It shows that the student is able to express his thought and ideas to a manner others can understand. It also shows that the student has acquired a certain amount of knowledge in some branches of study. Besides, the mind of a student, even if he is dull, receives good exercise when he prepares for an examination. A student’s success in an examination, therefore, helps employers and others to assess his mental or general ability.
Some people, however, argue that examinations test only a certain kind of skill. They say that many people have a good memory and a special ability to pass examinations and achieve brilliant results, though they have no capacity for original thought or imagination. But it should be realized that today the syllabuses are so extensive that a student cannot expect to pass an examination by relying entirely on his memory. The student of today must not only have a fair knowledge of the subject matter but also be able to show his intelligence and power of reasoning, especially if he is sitting for a higher examination. Therefore, a student’s ability to pass an examination must indicate some of his mental powers as well as his grasp of the subjects that he has studied.
If there were no examinations, most scholars would have been less informed than they are today. Examinations compel students to read as mush as they can, and as they do so, they absorb knowledge unconsciously. Further, because of examinations; teachers have to confine themselves to the syllabuses which are aimed at imparting knowledge in a systematic manner, and thus develop mental discipline.
Examinations are therefore an important part of academic studies.
Should teachers give pupils much homework? Discuss.
Many people now think that teachers give pupils too much homework. They say that it is unnecessary for children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, they argue that most teachers do not properly plan the homework tasks they give to pupils. The result is that pupils have to repeat tasks which they have already done at school.
Recently many parents complained about the difficult homework which teachers gave to their children. The parents said that most of the homework was a waste of time, and they wanted to stop it. Spain and Turkey are two countries which stopped homework recently. In Denmark, West Germany and several other countries in Europe, teachers cannot set homework at weekends. In Holland, teachers allow pupils to stay at school to do their homework. The children are free to help one another. Similar arrangements also exist in some British schools.
Most people agree that homework is unfair. A pupil who can do his homework in a quiet and comfortable room is in a much better position than a pupil who does his homework in a small, noisy room with the television on. Some parents help their children with their homework. Other parents take no interest at all in their children’s homework.
Homework should be abolished?
Homework is a bitter pill for many students. Teachers always give homework. They are given to help students to revise what has been done in the class and also the finish task set in school which the pupil could not finish on time.
Education and mastery of knowledge, is a matter of skill so the more practice one has the better skill. There are skill subjects and knowledge subjects. Both these categories require drill and repetition. The teacher, to some extend, drill the student in the class but each individual student cannot be expected to do the same amount as skills of students vary from each other.
Homework need not necessarily be repeating what has been done in the class, it may be more study. The student goes through references and acquires more and better knowledge. The world of knowledge is so wide that the class alone cannot bring everything into the grasp of the student. So the student must take up some initiative of his own. This is one of the purposes of homework.
The school also must see that the students are overburdened homework. The teachers must see to it that the homework is distributed evenly throughout the week. Still there are subjects like mathematics or transcription in the lower classes which require daily attention. There are other aspects of school work which can be attended to during the weekend, for example, map making and drawing diagrams.
Simply because some boys find homework too much to cope up with, it cannot be abolished. The school should provide some facilities, so that the boys can conveniently attend to their home work and the teachers can come willingly forward to help such boys.
in my point of view.homework is necsesary for students.practice makes perfect
